Westword editor Patty Calhoun will be featured in a Fireside Chat at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Denver Press Club, 1330 Glenarm Place. The program, sponsored by the Colorado Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, is free and open to the public.
Calhoun received the SPJ Colorado Pro Keeper of the Flame award in 2014 in recognition of her distinguished career in journalism. She was one of the founders of Westword in 1977 and has been a force in making the alternative weekly a major influence in the Denver media market. Westword has won numerous awards for investigative reporting.
The magazine’s Best of Denver publication is its most popular issue, and the 2016 edition was the 33rd annual critique of metro-area people and places. This year’s edition was published in March.
The Westword editor also is a regular panelist on Colorado Inside Out, Colorado Public Television 12’s weekly review of city, state and national news events.
In 2014, Calhoun won the national Sigma Delta Chi award for excellence in the general column writing in the nondaily circulation 1-100,000 category for a collection of columns published from June through December that year. She won the 2010 SDX feature reporting award for “Spreading Her Wings” in the same circulation category.
The former president of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies was inducted into the Denver Press Club Hall of Fame in 2007.
Metered parking is available on Glenarm Place in front of and near the Press Club. Parking is also available in a public lot on the southwest side of the Club. Both street and parking lot meters accept credit cards.
