Popularity of the Academy Award-winning film “Spotlight” and the release of the Panama Papers have revived the public’s interest in investigative journalism.
The former told about the Boston Globe’s expose of a decades-long child abuse scandal. The latter revealed an international web of money laundering and tax avoidance following a yearlong investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
9News producer Nicole Vap will discuss investigative journalism at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at the Denver Press Club, 1330 Glenarm Place.
The program, sponsored by the Colorado Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, is free and open to the public.
Vap leads an award-winning team of reporters and producers that investigate government corruption, questionable business practices, crime and scams targeting the public. The KUSA investigative team has won numerous awards including the 2011 Columbia DuPoint Silver Baton for excellence in journalism, regional Emmys and Edward R. Murrow honors, and Associated Press and Colorado Broadcasters Association awards.
Vap and 9Wants to Know were 2012 finalists for the Investigative Reporters and Editors Freedom of Information award for “Failed Deaths,” a series of stories exposing the deaths of Colorado children under the watch of Human Services case workers across the state.
Vap is a 13-year IRE member, and serves on the board of directors of the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition and the Denver Metro Crime Stoppers organization.
Metered street parking is available on Glenarm Place in front of the press club and in the public lot southwest of the club. The meters accept credit cards.
