Journalism pros offer students job-hunting advice

Students from Front Range colleges gathered at the Denver Press Club on April 3 to have their resumes and portfolios reviewed by Colorado journalism professionals.

Students from the University of Colorado, Colorado State University and Arapahoe Community College, among others, attended the day-long event, hearing advice on constructing a killer resume and pursuing jobs and internships in the industry.

The event was sponsored by CU’s College of Media, Communication and Information, as well as the Colorado Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Denver Press Club. CU provided pizza for lunch, when SPJ Colorado Pro education chair Doug Bell presented his “How To Get a Media Job” seminar.

Pros who gave their time and wisdom included: Jim Clarke of the Associated Press; Chandra Thomas Whitfield of Colorado Public Radio; Paolo Zialcita of Denverite; Beth Potter of the Colorado Student News Service (and SPJ Colorado Pro board secretary); freelance reporter Cassie Ballard; Michelle Fulcher, retired from the Denver Post and CPR (and SPJ Colorado Pro’s 2026 Keeper of the Flame honoree); Joe Vaccarelli, producer for the I team at Channel 7; and Marianne Goodland of Colorado Politics (and SPJ Colorado Pro’s 2023 Keeper of the Flame honoree).

SPJ Colorado Pro thanks all the professionals who took part. We also encourage students and pros alike to join us in the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and upholding high ethical standards. We also offer annual scholarships to journalism students. Learn how to join here.

Also, students are welcome to join us April 25 for networking and celebration at the SPJ Top of the Rockies Awards Reception. Admission is free. Details and RSVP here.
