SPJ Colorado Pro calls for chapter board candidates

The Colorado Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is looking for SPJ members to join its board of directors.

The board meets monthly in downtown Denver. Members of the board plan programs, recruit members, communicate our work and more. Board members serve two-year terms beginning in mid-2026.

If you are interested in joining the board, reach out to board President Deb Hurley Brobst at deb.hurley.brobst@gmail.com by May 22. Deb can also answer any questions.

To help us remain a robust chapter of SPJ and carry out its mission of “encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior,” we kindly ask that all members of the SPJ Colorado Pro Chapter board will:

> Commit to meeting in person once a month (or Zoom if you’re not in the region).

> Commit to at least one hour of work each week with a goal of supporting monthly programs, our Top of the Rockies Awards reception in spring 2027 and our Region 9 conference in 2028.

> Join a standing chapter committee with one of the board members as chair.

> Identify a primary communications channel and commit to responding to any communication within 48 hours.

> Attend major events organized by the chapter, and make an effort to attend and promote smaller programs throughout the year.

>Discuss and help choose honorees for our chapter’s annual individual awards, including Keeper of the Flame, Journalist of the Year, Educator of the Year, the First Amendment Award and the new Ethical Fred Award for ethics in journalism.

>Agree to help judge contest entries for another SPJ chapter in exchange for that chapter judging our Top of the Rockies contest.

>Adhere to the absence policy: According to the bylaws, board members are allowed three unexcused absences before they may be removed from the board. Board members should notify the president of a pending absence 48 hours in advance, which will be considered an excused absence. If absent, the board member is responsible for reviewing the minutes and catching up on their committee and/or officer duties before the next board meeting.
